About this tender

Castoldi JT 19 SOLAS - what we know.

The Castoldi JT 19 RB SOLAS is the build we specify when a programme moves into the over-500-GT band and the captain needs a MED-approved rescue tender that doubles as a credible owner boat. At 5.98m and 2.44m beam, single Volvo Penta D7-CTA diesel running through a Castoldi waterjet, this is the most capable small SOLAS rescue platform on the market that still functions as a tender for the day.

SOLAS approval is not a paperwork exercise. The hull is engineered to the rescue boat regulation, the lifting hardware is certified to the appropriate scheme, and the boat is plated by a notified body for that specific role. What Castoldi have done with the JT19 RB is fold all of that into a hull that still looks and runs like a normal tender, so the captain is not stuck choosing between rescue capability and an owner-presentable boat. We have delivered this hull as the only tender on multiple flag-state-compliant builds.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

MED-approved rescue tender

SOLAS and MED approved as a rescue tender for yachts over 500 GT. That covers the regulatory requirement directly, with the certified lifting points, towing capability and rescue equipment integrated to the published scheme. No retrofit, no compliance gap at survey.

02

Volvo Penta D7-CTA driveline

Single Volvo Penta D7-CTA marine diesel rated at 127 kW (170 hp), running through a Castoldi waterjet. That driveline gives the JT19 RB a quoted top speed of 32.5 knots with six guests on board, comfortably inside the SOLAS rescue performance envelope while still being a usable owner tender.

03

Six-guest CE plate

Beyond the SOLAS role, the boat plates at six passengers under the standard CE scheme, which lets it work day-to-day as the owner's primary or secondary tender on smaller superyachts. 112-litre fuel tank, planing hull, the same Castoldi build philosophy as the rest of the JT range.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

When does a programme need a SOLAS-rated tender?
Yachts over 500 GT carrying paying passengers, or commercial-flagged builds, typically require a MED-approved rescue tender. That includes most charter-flagged builds above the 500 GT threshold and a number of private flag states for the same gross-tonnage band. If you are building above 500 GT, talk to your build captain and naval architect early, the rescue tender slot is usually decided at GA stage.
Can the JT19 SOLAS run as the only tender?
On smaller compliant builds, yes. Six-guest CE plate, normal Castoldi geometry, 32.5-knot top speed in service, the boat works as the owner tender for day runs as well as covering the rescue role. On larger programmes we usually pair it with a separate guest tender so the SOLAS hull stays in the rescue role and the day-boat duty is split off.
Is the SOLAS hull the same as the standard JT19?
Same family, different build specification. The SOLAS variant carries the engineering and certification work for the rescue role, including the lifting scheme, the towing hardware and the equipment fit-out. The standard JT19 at 5.68m is the CE-only sibling, lower cost and not approved for SOLAS service.

Castoldi

Albairate, Italy

Castoldi is an Italian manufacturer headquartered in Albairate, in the Milan metropolitan area of Lombardy. The company has been developing waterjet propulsion since the early 1960s, with the first mass-produced Castoldi waterjet unit presented at the Genoa Boat Show in 1969. Today more than 40,000 Castoldi hydrojet units operate worldwide, across civilian, military, and commercial fleets.

The range we ask Castoldi for runs from compact garage-fit tenders at 4.3m right through to the flagship Jet Tender 34 at 10.5m - sixteen passengers, twin 440 hp diesels paired to twin Turbodrive waterjet units, and a certified top speed of 50 knots. Every model in between follows the same build logic: deep-V hulls hand-laid in Kevlar and vinylester resin, Castoldi's own Turbodrive waterjet drives manufactured in-house, and a package of practical details - retractable helms, self-bailing cockpits, and walkthrough deck layouts - that captains value on a working programme.

The propeller-free drivetrain is the defining feature of any Castoldi. No exposed rotating parts below the keel means safe operation around swimmers and watersport guests; zero draft restriction means beach landings and sand-bank crossings that a conventional-drive tender cannot attempt. SOLAS-certified rescue versions (JT 14 RB, JT 18 RB, JT 19 RB) sit alongside the standard tender line, so owners running a dual-purpose programme can specify a single platform. We'd put the mid-range JT 21 through JT 28 models alongside the main European jet-tender alternatives: the build quality is consistent, the proprietary waterjet technology is genuinely in-house, and the range breadth covers most mothership garage sizes without compromise.
