Limousine Tender

Coachbuilt enclosed-cabin guest tender, designed for transfers in foul weather and arrival presence.

Definition

A limousine tender is a coachbuilt, enclosed-cabin guest tender designed to deliver guests from yacht to shore in comfort, in any weather, and with arrival presence. The defining feature is the saloon: a glazed, climate-controlled cabin seating six to twelve guests, usually appointed with leather upholstery, a bar, and detailing chosen to match the mothership.

Background and use

The limousine concept emerged from charter operators wanting to keep guests dry and presentable on the run from anchor to a Cap Ferrat dock or a Capri pier. Early builds were converted open boats with hard tops; the contemporary limousine is a purpose-designed product. Pascoe (Cornwall), Hodgdon (Maine), Cockwells (Cornwall), Wajer (Netherlands), Tender of Sweden, and Wally Tender lead the segment, with hull lengths typically between 7.5m and 11m and price points from EUR 600,000 to over EUR 2m.

The brief is specific. The cabin must be quiet enough that conversation works at cruise speed, climate-controlled for both summer Mediterranean and winter Caribbean conditions, and stepped through without the guests having to duck or grip handrails. Visibility is panoramic, ideally with electrochromic glazing for privacy. The exterior reads as a small motoryacht, with the mothership's livery, and frequently with bespoke detailing (varnished teak, polished stainless, signature paintwork) that signals the yacht behind.

Operationally the limousine sits in the garage alongside an open or sport tender. The two cover different missions: limousine for transfers, the open tender for water sports and beach picnics. Many owners specify both; few owners run only a limousine because the cabin makes water-sports use awkward.

Related considerations

  • Cabin headroom is the deal-breaker for tall guests; insist on 1.95m clearance throughout if relevant.
  • Air conditioning capacity must handle the worst summer day with a full load; specify generously.
  • Glass care is a real maintenance line item; salt etching ruins resale value.
  • Boarding ergonomics from a swim platform matter as much as cabin comfort; trial with the actual yacht in mind.
  • Limousines weigh more than open tenders of equivalent length; confirm davit SWL margins.
