About this tender

Reliant Yachts Express - what we know.

The X40 Express is the chase variant of Reliant Yachts' three-tender programme drawn by Dave MacFarlane and Jim Ewing for a single megayacht commission. It is a modern, robust interpretation of the classic express cruiser, 40 feet long and built to run at 40 knots, with the kind of clean detailing that shows the design work was done end-to-end rather than parts-binned.

The lines tell the story: plumb bow, raked wraparound windscreen, flush forward deck, cambered teak, and a low-profile cap rail painted the same metallic silver as the hull. Remove the carbon-fibre hardtop and the boat changes from coupe to convertible. The X40 carries 605 L of diesel, which is the spec line that lets it function as a real chase asset rather than a short-leg shuttle.

All three Reliant tenders, the Express, the Lander and the Limousine, were specified for a single new-build megayacht and became surplus to requirements before delivery, which is what put them onto the brokerage market as an unused matching set. They represent a rare opportunity to acquire three matching, uniquely-designed, high-spec, never-used tenders from a single design hand.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

MacFarlane and Ewing design

Lines drawn by Dave MacFarlane and Jim Ewing of Reliant Yachts, the Rhode Island studio behind the X40 series. The design philosophy is classic express reinterpreted with current build technology: plumb bow, raked windscreen, clean cap rail, cambered teak deck. Looks correct from every angle, which is harder than the brochures imply.

02

Convertible carbon hardtop

Carbon-fibre hardtop is removable, taking the boat from coupe to convertible. That single change shifts how the tender behaves: shaded enclosed cockpit for cooler weather, fully open sport cruiser for a Mediterranean afternoon. A lot of design work goes into making that transition look right; on the X40 it does.

03

40 knots with chase range

Top speed in the 40-knot band with 605 L of diesel for usable working range. This is the spec that earns it a chase-tender brief rather than a coastal shuttle: the boat can run an independent half-day away from the mothership, follow the yacht through a Mediterranean leg, or cross to a separate anchorage without a bowser.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

Why the matching trio?
The three tenders were commissioned together for a single new-build megayacht: the Express as chase asset, the Limousine as guest-experience tender, the Lander as utility boat. Same design language, same paint, same hull family. The original owner ended up surplus before delivery; the trio came to market as an unused matching set, which is rare in the segment.
How does the Express compare with a Windy SR44?
Different design philosophy. The Reliant is a classic express reinterpretation, North American-flavoured, removable hardtop, more weather protection. The SR44 is a Dubois-drawn sport-chase platform, more performance-focused, more European in proportion. Both are credible chase boats; choice typically tracks the mothership's design language and the owner's eye.
What about the carbon hardtop, is it practical?
Yes. Removable hardtop systems on this scale need engineering care to avoid sealing problems and visual compromise, and Reliant got this one right. The hardtop comes off cleanly for the open configuration and goes back on without leaks or fit issues. It is a meaningful piece of the boat's design rather than a bolt-on option.

The yard

Reliant Yachts

Newport, Rhode Island, USA

Reliant Yachts is a Newport, Rhode Island design-and-build house founded in 2012 by partners Dave MacFarlane and Jim Ewing, with construction carried out at partner yards - the X40 programme was fabricated in Tuzla, Turkey. The firm targets the custom and semi-custom end of the market, from 40-foot harbour cruisers up to blue-water sailing and power yachts of 140 feet and beyond.

The X40 is the build we ask Reliant for when a single superyacht programme calls for a matched trio of tenders with a unified design language. All three hulls share a 12.26m (40.0ft) overall length and the same plumb bow, clean topsides, and metallic-finish paint scheme. The X40 Express is the chase-oriented platform: an epoxy, cold-moulded wood-laminate hull, carbon-fibre deck with classic teak surface, and twin Cummins QSB 6.7 480-hp diesels driving Konrad 660b stern drives - which retract to let the boat slide into a tender garage with a clearance of 2.9m. Sea trials recorded a top speed of 40.7 knots; comfortable cruising sits between 27 and 33 knots. The X40T Limousine shares the hull form, twin Cummins QSB 6.7 425-hp diesels, and the same carbon hardtop and saloon structure, hitting 38 knots in trials. The X40L Lander swaps to an aluminium hull and Hamilton jet drives to handle shore landings, and carries a stone-top dining table for fourteen that rises electrically from under the deck.

What distinguishes the programme is its garage-first engineering discipline: hull height, lifting points, and stern-drive kinematics are resolved at the drawing stage, not retrofitted on the hard. We'd put it alongside bespoke European tender programmes on finish quality, at a measurably lower price point.
