About this tender

Alen 55 - what we know.

The Alen 55 is the build we ask the Turkish yard for when a programme calls for a serious day boat or mothership tender that can carry sixteen persons in genuine comfort rather than on paper alone. At 16.80 metres with a 4.80-metre beam, it sits in a part of the market where deck volume and interior volume can coexist without one cannibalising the other.

Propulsion is twin Volvo IPS 800, a pod-drive arrangement that delivers 35 knots at the top end and a practical cruising speed of 30 knots with a quoted range of 280 NM on the 2,150-litre fuel load. That is a credible coastal and short-passage number - enough to cover an owner's programme without a fuel stop at every port.

The hull is full composite with AIREX core, which gives the 55 a displacement figure of 21 tonnes without the weight penalty you would carry in a glass-over-foam or solid-laminate structure. The walk-around deck, deep bulwarks, and a hydraulic gangway that doubles as a swim ladder are practical details that hold up in daily use rather than just in a brochure photograph.

Below decks the layout can be configured to include a crew cabin or an additional guest cabin, and the lounge sofa converts to a double berth. Storage is generous by the standards of this length. The finish spec - teak sole, leather wall panels, lacquered surfaces - is what you would expect from a yard positioning itself alongside the established Italian volume builders.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Full Composite AIREX Hull

The 55 is built on a full composite structure with AIREX foam core, keeping displacement to 21 tonnes at 16.80 metres. That laminate approach delivers a stiffness-to-weight ratio that matters at 35 knots and keeps the hull honest over a long ownership cycle.

02

Twin Volvo IPS 800 Pod Drive

Volvo IPS 800 pods give the 55 joystick docking, a tight turning circle, and a clean underbody free of conventional shafts and struts. Thirty knots at cruise and 35 at the top end are achievable figures for this displacement and power combination.

03

280 NM Range on 2,150 Litres

The 2,150-litre fuel capacity supports a 280 NM range at cruising speed, which is a meaningful number for coastal programmes. Sixteen persons on board with that range gives the 55 genuine passage-making credibility as a chase or support vessel.

04

Hydraulic Gangway and Swim Ladder

The aft hydraulic gangway is designed to double as a swim ladder, removing the need for a separate fitting and keeping the transom clean. It is the kind of detail that simplifies daily operations for a small crew.

05

CE Category B Certification

The 55 holds CE Category B certification, covering offshore passages up to sea state five and wind force six. That puts it in the range relevant to owners operating in exposed coastal and open-water programmes rather than sheltered coastal day-use only.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

What CE certification category does the Alen 55 hold?
The Alen 55 is certified to CE Category B, which covers offshore use in sea states up to force six and significant wave heights to four metres. That is the relevant tier for owners running an exposed coastal or short offshore programme rather than sheltered inshore day use.
What propulsion system does the Alen 55 use?
The 55 runs twin Volvo IPS 800 pod drives. IPS pods give joystick docking, a cleaner underbody compared to conventional shaft drives, and generally better fuel efficiency at cruise. The quoted outputs support 30 knots at cruise and 35 knots at maximum speed.
How many guests can the Alen 55 carry?
The manufacturer quotes sixteen persons on board. Up to eight guests can be seated at the extending cockpit table. The CE Category B certification supports that capacity in the intended operating conditions.
What hull construction does the Alen 55 use?
The hull is full composite with AIREX foam core. AIREX is a closed-cell PVC foam commonly used in performance composite laminates to reduce weight and improve stiffness. The yard quotes a displacement of 21 tonnes for the finished vessel.
What is the fuel range of the Alen 55?
Alen quotes 280 NM at cruising speed from the 2,150-litre fuel load. That is a practical figure for coastal passage-making and is sufficient for most Mediterranean or Caribbean legs without a fuel stop, depending on conditions and loading.
Can the Alen 55 be configured as a mothership tender or chase boat?
At 16.80 metres, CE Category B, sixteen persons capacity, and 280 NM range, the 55 sits comfortably in the chase and shadow-vessel category. The flexible interior layout - crew cabin option, convertible lounge berth - supports a working crew deployment alongside a guest programme.

The yard

Alen

Istanbul, Turkey

Alen Yacht is a Turkish semi-custom builder founded in 2007 by Alp Ozcan, with its production yard in Istanbul and service and representation in St. Tropez and Fort Lauderdale. The yard has positioned itself squarely in the superyacht-tender and chase-boat segment, with a range that runs from 45 to 77 feet - covering the ground between a practical day tender and a proper passage-capable chase vessel.

The build that put Alen on the programme is the Alen 55: a 16.8m composite hull with AIREX-core construction, twin 800 hp Volvo Penta engines, 34 knots top speed, and a 250-nautical-mile range at 28 knots. The Alen 42 preceded it with more than twenty hulls delivered, which is a meaningful number for a boutique yard. The flagship Alen 68 steps up to 20.32m, a full composite AIREX-core hull, twin V12 MAN engines producing 1,500 hp, 45 knots maximum speed, and CE Category A certification for sixteen passengers. Foster and Partners provided the exterior and interior design on the 68, which is an unusual collaboration for a builder at this scale and signals where the yard is aiming.

Alen builds all elements in-house in Istanbul except glazing, and runs its own test tank for hull development. The design language is consistent across the range: forward-carried beam, deep bulwarks, walk-around decks, and hull surfaces left exposed rather than buried under furniture. We'd put it alongside the better Italian open-boat builders for finish quality, with a price point that reflects the Istanbul cost base.
