About this tender

Castoldi 14 RB/SOLAS - what we know.

The JT 14 RB is the SOLAS-rated rescue-boat variant of the Castoldi 14. At 4.28m LOA, it is built to MED type approval requirements as a fast rescue boat for use on yachts and commercial vessels where SOLAS compliance is mandatory. Practical use cases are split between dedicated rescue duty on a larger yacht and dual-role tender plus rescue boat on smaller commercial yachts where deck space rules out a separate dedicated rescue craft.

Power is a SOLAS-rated Yanmar 4JH4-HTE diesel at 110 hp coupled to a Castoldi waterjet. The headline engineering is the RI.SE.R. recessed inflatable self-righting system, which sits in a stern peak and avoids the bulky external apparatus that other rescue boats carry. The result is a boat that meets the MED rules without looking like a dedicated rescue craft, which makes it acceptable as a guest tender as well.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

MED Type Approval rescue boat

Built to SOLAS standards with MED Type Approval certification, the JT 14 RB qualifies as the rescue boat for yachts that need to comply with SOLAS or LY3 rules. This is the operational reason to specify the RB variant: it ticks the regulatory box that the standard JT 14 does not.

02

RI.SE.R. recessed self-righting

Castoldi's patented recessed inflatable self-righting system uses a balloon and tank stowed in a stern peak. It meets SOLAS self-righting requirements without the bulky external rollover apparatus most equivalent rescue boats carry. The boat looks essentially the same as the non-SOLAS JT 14, which matters when it is also doing guest tender duty.

03

Yanmar 4JH4-HTE waterjet driveline

The SOLAS-rated Yanmar 4JH4-HTE at 110 hp at 3,200 rpm drives a Castoldi waterjet. Slightly less peak power than the standard 14's 4JH3-DTE in exchange for SOLAS certification and proven service support. Top speed is the same 34 knots.

04

Dual rescue plus tender duty

On commercial yachts under LY3 or charter operation rules, the RB variant lets a single boat fulfil both the rescue boat and guest tender role. This frees up garage space for other equipment. For larger yachts above 500 GT we usually recommend the JT 18 RB or 19 RB instead, but on smaller hulls the 14 RB is the practical answer.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

Does the RB variant replace a dedicated rescue boat?
Yes, on yachts where SOLAS or LY3 rules apply and the boat is type-approved for the role. The JT 14 RB has MED Type Approval and meets the rescue-boat regulatory requirement without needing a separate dedicated craft. For yachts above 500 GT, check whether the JT 18 RB or 19 RB is more appropriate to the rule set.
How does it differ from the standard JT 14?
Same hull dimensions and Castoldi waterjet, different engine (SOLAS-rated 4JH4-HTE versus standard 4JH3-DTE), and the RI.SE.R. self-righting system in the stern peak. Visually they are very similar, which is part of the point: the RB version meets compliance without looking like a dedicated rescue boat.
What is the practical working load?
Five passengers plus one crew under SOLAS certification. The boat can also be used as a guest tender, where the dimensional capacity supports the same five-to-six person figure for a comfortable cruise. For longer shore runs with more guests, look at a larger Castoldi or pair the 14 RB with a separate guest tender.
Will it fit in a small tender garage?
Yes. At 4.28m LOA it is the smallest credible diesel SOLAS rescue boat in the market and fits inside the tightest garages on yachts that need SOLAS compliance. Confirm against the lift and garage GA before committing on a specific hull.

Castoldi

Albairate, Italy

Castoldi is an Italian manufacturer headquartered in Albairate, in the Milan metropolitan area of Lombardy. The company has been developing waterjet propulsion since the early 1960s, with the first mass-produced Castoldi waterjet unit presented at the Genoa Boat Show in 1969. Today more than 40,000 Castoldi hydrojet units operate worldwide, across civilian, military, and commercial fleets.

The range we ask Castoldi for runs from compact garage-fit tenders at 4.3m right through to the flagship Jet Tender 34 at 10.5m - sixteen passengers, twin 440 hp diesels paired to twin Turbodrive waterjet units, and a certified top speed of 50 knots. Every model in between follows the same build logic: deep-V hulls hand-laid in Kevlar and vinylester resin, Castoldi's own Turbodrive waterjet drives manufactured in-house, and a package of practical details - retractable helms, self-bailing cockpits, and walkthrough deck layouts - that captains value on a working programme.

The propeller-free drivetrain is the defining feature of any Castoldi. No exposed rotating parts below the keel means safe operation around swimmers and watersport guests; zero draft restriction means beach landings and sand-bank crossings that a conventional-drive tender cannot attempt. SOLAS-certified rescue versions (JT 14 RB, JT 18 RB, JT 19 RB) sit alongside the standard tender line, so owners running a dual-purpose programme can specify a single platform. We'd put the mid-range JT 21 through JT 28 models alongside the main European jet-tender alternatives: the build quality is consistent, the proprietary waterjet technology is genuinely in-house, and the range breadth covers most mothership garage sizes without compromise.
