About this tender

MasterCraft NXT22 - what we know.

The MasterCraft NXT22 is the build we point owners and captains toward when a superyacht programme calls for a dedicated watersports platform that can cover every discipline without requiring a second boat. At 6.71 metres on the hull, it fits the aft deck apertures of many 50- to 80-metre vessels, carries fourteen guests under ABYC capacity ratings, and pairs a single Ilmor 6.0L V8 with a V-drive layout that positions the engine aft - keeping the cockpit floor clear and the wake geometry honest for both surfing and wakeboarding.

The 2020 redesign is the version most enquiries centre on, and with good reason. MasterCraft rebuilt the NXT22 from the bottom up for that model year: new hull with a pickle-fork bow and reversed chines, a 60-horsepower jump over the outgoing 5.7-litre unit, and the optional Gen 2 Surf System with three transom tabs that create a side-switchable surf wave from the helm. The platform also rolls off the same Tennessee assembly line as MasterCraft's flagship XStar and ProStar, which tells you something about the tolerance stack and laminate quality.

We position the NXT22 alongside comparable V-drive inboards from Malibu and Nautique in the 22-foot bracket. The MasterCraft holds its ground on build finish and comes in at a meaningfully accessible price for a vessel in its specification tier. Standard ballast runs to 562 kg; fit the Gen 2 system and that rises to 975 kg, giving the hull enough displacement bias to produce usable surf waves for intermediate to advanced riders without relying on dead weight in lockers.

For a tender programme, the practical merits are straightforward. The ZFT2 tower folds below windshield height for garage clearance, the 185-litre fuel tank supports a full day of tow-sport activity without a mid-session transfer, and the 88 cubic feet of under-seat storage accommodates a serious board and kit inventory. We'd put it alongside the Axis T22 and Nautique G21 for any owner shopping a watersports-first platform in this length band.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Ilmor 6.0L V-Drive Inboard

The standard engine for the 2020 redesign is the Ilmor 6.0L MPI V8, tested by BoatTEST at 373 hp and delivering a top speed of 40 mph (approximately 35 knots) at 5,200 rpm. The V-drive mounting positions the engine aft of midships, optimising the hull's weight bias for wake and surf towing without sacrificing cockpit volume.

02

Gen 2 Surf System

Available as a factory option, the Gen 2 Surf System adds three transom tabs - two surf tabs flanking a central wake-tuning plate - controlled by rocker switches at the helm. With the system fitted, maximum ballast capacity rises to 2,150 lb (975 kg), creating side-switchable surf waves without the rider needing to reposition the boat.

03

Fourteen-Person Capacity

The NXT22's horseshoe cockpit lounge, pickle-fork bow seating, and full-width aft bench accommodate up to fourteen guests within the boat's rated capacity. The 99-inch beam keeps passengers facing each other without contact, and an optional reversible rear centre seat gives observers a direct sightline to the rider behind.

04

Shared Assembly Line with Flagship Models

MasterCraft builds the NXT22 on the same production line in the same Vonore, Tennessee factory as the XStar and ProStar. This means the laminate schedule, fit tolerances, and vinyl and hardware specifications are consistent with boats at twice the price - a material point for any owner assessing long-term hold value and finish durability at sea.

05

Foldable ZFT2 Tower and 185 L Fuel Tank

The ZFT2 aluminium tower folds below windshield height via a simple crank mechanism, a practical necessity for tight yacht garage envelopes. The 185-litre fuel tank, confirmed by BoatTEST at 49 US gallons, returns a tested range of approximately 85 nautical miles at cruise, covering a full day of tow-sport sessions on a single fill.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

Does the NXT22 fit a standard superyacht garage?
The hull measures 6.71 m on length and 2.49 m on beam. The ZFT2 tower folds below windshield height, which resolves the vertical clearance issue on most garage doors. Confirm the opening width against your vessel's naval architect drawings; the 2.49 m beam is tighter than many purpose-built chase tenders but manageable for garages designed around a 22-foot watersports boat.
What is the standard ballast capacity, and is the Gen 2 Surf System worth specifying?
Standard ballast is 1,240 lb (562 kg) across a three-part system: a fixed 181 kg tank forward and two fillable stern bags at 204 kg each. The Gen 2 option raises maximum ballast to 2,150 lb (975 kg) and adds three transom tabs for side-to-side wave switching. For owners with intermediate-to-advanced surf riders aboard, we regard the Gen 2 as essential rather than optional.
What engine options are available?
The 2020 redesign introduced the Ilmor 6.0L MPI V8 as standard, tested at 373 hp and delivering approximately 35 knots top speed. Boatshore records the rated output at 380 hp for the production engine. An Ilmor 5.3L is available as a lower-cost alternative; the 6.0L is the specification we recommend for vessels where the boat will carry a full complement of fourteen guests regularly.
How does the NXT22 perform as a ski boat, not just a surf platform?
The hull's reversed chines and two lifting strakes produce a relatively clean slalom wake at ski speeds. BoatTEST recorded 15 mph at 2,800 rpm for wake-sport towing. The NXT22 skews toward board sports by design, but MasterCraft's factory wake profiles include a ski preset, and the Zero Off GPS speed control holds the line well for an inboard at this price point.
What is the tested range of the NXT22?
BoatTEST recorded approximately 85 nautical miles at a cruise speed of 25.5 mph (approx. 22 knots), with a fuel burn of 11.6 gph and a 10 percent tank reserve held back from the 185-litre (49-gallon) tank. For a tender programme, that supports a full day of watersports activity before a fuel transfer is required.
How does the NXT22 compare to the NXT20 and NXT24?
The NXT22 sits in the middle of MasterCraft's NXT line, offering more cockpit and bow volume than the NXT20 while coming in at a lower price point than the NXT24. The 22-foot hull is the most common specification for superyacht watersports tenders in the NXT series, balancing garage fit with meaningful passenger capacity and ballast for surf use.

MasterCraft

Vonore, Tennessee, USA

MasterCraft is an American performance boat manufacturer founded in 1968 by waterskier Rob Shirley, who built his first hull in a two-stall horse barn in Maryville, Tennessee. The company is now headquartered in Vonore, Tennessee, where it hand-builds thousands of boats per year at a single facility on Tellico Lake.

The core range targets the watersports performance market - tournament ski, wakeboard, and wakesurf - with fifteen production models spanning the NXT, XT, X, XStar, and ProStar families. The flagship X26 (7.92m, seating for 18, CE Class C coastal certification) and the XStar 25 (7.8m, 630 hp Ilmor supercharged 6.2L engine, 18 seats) sit at the top of the range and are the models we discuss with superyacht programmes. Both carry the deep-V hull, ballast-management systems, and high-gloss gelcoat finish that translate directly to the tender role.

MasterCraft entered the superyacht tender segment formally in 2013, when MasterCraft Boats UK was appointed the brand's worldwide superyacht tender dealer. That programme covers specification advice, certified lifting solutions, logistics, and crew training - which matters when a 26-foot inboard towboat needs to live on a davit. The build quality is consistent: fiberglass laminate construction, Ilmor marine engines built on proven V8 blocks, and a five-year bow-to-stern warranty standard across the range. We'd put the X and XStar families alongside the known European tender suppliers for fit-and-finish; the differentiation is the depth of the watersports capability behind the boat, which few purpose-built tenders can match at this size.
