About this tender

MasterCraft XT23 - what we know.

The XT23 is the build we ask MasterCraft for when your on-water programme needs to cover surfing, wakeboarding, skiing, and a full crew day without buying three boats to do it. At 7.11m LOA with a 2.59m beam and capacity for sixteen passengers, it sits right in the middle of the XT Series - more boat than the NXT range, more manageable than the X Series models above it. The hull is a variable-deadrise GRP V-drive configuration, which plants the stern cleanly through turns and delivers the displacement the surf system needs to work.

Propulsion across the model range is Ilmor inboard, with the 2020 model year moving to a 430 hp 6.0-litre GDI unit as standard. The V-drive transmission runs at a 1.57:1 reduction ratio, turning a four-blade nibral prop. BoatTEST recorded a top speed of 42.1 mph on a pre-2020 test hull with the outgoing 5.7-litre engine; the step up to the 6.0-litre GDI for MY2020 moves that figure up. For the 2025 iteration, Boating Magazine tested the 5.3L GDI HO variant and recorded fuel consumption of 2.5 mpg at cruise, with 10.7 gph at full ballast in wakesurf mode - competitive for the class.

The surf system is the core of the XT23's value proposition. The 2020 model ships with the Gen 2 Surf System and 2,600 lb of ballast capacity; later revisions have pushed that figure to 3,300 lb on tested 2025 hulls. The system offers more than 1,600 size-and-shape combinations, with simple presets for surf left, surf right, and wakesurf modes accessible from the helm touchscreen. We'd put this alongside the Nautique G23 and Malibu Wakesetter 22 MXZ as the three realistic shortlist entries at this length and price point, and the MasterCraft holds its own on surf-wave quality and interior volume.

The cockpit layout is where the XT23 earns its sixteen-person rating in practice, not just on a capacity plate. U-shaped bow seating, a doublewide observer position, flip-over transom backrests, and a full-length swim platform give the boat genuine crowd capacity. Deckadence custom flooring runs bow to stern; upholstery is manufactured in-house by MasterCraft using mildew-, UV-, and stain-resistant materials. The tower options range from the folding Z6 base unit through to the Z8 with integrated side-tow points, and the Z10 power tower for owners who want hydraulic raise-and-lower. Storage is well thought out, with dedicated cooler space, anchor stowage, and under-seat lockers throughout.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

V-Drive Inboard Platform

The XT23 uses a V-drive layout with a 1.57:1 reduction transmission, planting the engine weight amidships and keeping the stern clear for the surf system and swim platform. BoatTEST confirmed the configuration tracks cleanly through turns without washing off speed - important on a boat expected to spend hours in wakesurf mode.

02

Ballast and Surf System

The 2020 model ships with 2,600 lb of ballast capacity and MasterCraft's Gen 2 Surf System; 2025 tested hulls carry 3,300 lb. The system provides over 1,600 combinations of wave size and shape, with simple helm-accessible presets for both sides. Boating Magazine confirmed the wave is customisable for beginners through to experienced surfers.

03

Sixteen-Passenger Cockpit

At 7.11m, the XT23 rates sixteen passengers and justifies that number with U-shaped bow seating, a doublewide observer seat, convertible transom benches, and a full-length swim platform. The hull also offers 3.18 sq m of storage, with dedicated cooler space, anchor stowage, and under-seat lockers across the cockpit.

04

Ilmor Inboard Engine Options

MasterCraft specifies Ilmor inboard engines across the XT23 range, from the base 320 hp 5.0L MPI through to the 430 hp 6.0L GDI. The 2021 model's base engine, the 380 hp Ilmor 6.0L MPI, produces 407 ft-lb of peak torque. The 2025 standard fitment is the 5.3L GDI HO unit, tested at 2.5 mpg at cruise speed.

05

In-House Upholstery and GRP Build

MasterCraft produces its own upholstery using mildew-, UV-, and stain-resistant materials; the optional CoolFeel vinyl is rated 30 percent cooler in direct sun. The hull is GRP with no structural timber - BoatTEST confirmed no wood is used in MasterCraft construction - and dry weight is rated at 2,268 kg across the tested model range.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

What engine options does the MasterCraft XT23 offer?
The XT23 has been offered with a range of Ilmor inboard engines across model years, from the base 320 hp 5.0L MPI through to the 430 hp 6.0L GDI. The 2021 base unit is the 380 hp Ilmor 6.0L MPI. From 2025, the standard fitment is the Ilmor 5.3L GDI HO. All use V-drive transmission at a 1.57:1 reduction ratio.
How much ballast does the XT23 carry?
The 2020 model carries 2,600 lb of ballast capacity, paired with the Gen 2 Surf System. Boating Magazine's 2025 test boat was fitted with 3,300 lb of ballast. Both configurations support MasterCraft's surf-wave shaping system, which offers over 1,600 combinations of wave size and shape.
What is the dry weight of the MasterCraft XT23?
BoatTEST and the boatsales.com.au specification sheet both list the dry weight at 2,268 kg (5,000 lb). Later model years, from 2022 onward, are listed at 2,381 kg (5,250 lb) by motorandkeel.com, likely reflecting the increased ballast and fuel capacity introduced at the 2022 redesign.
Is the XT23 suitable for water skiing as well as wakeboarding and wakesurfing?
Yes. MasterCraft positions the XT23 as a crossover; running with no ballast and using the centre tab at 30 to 50 percent produces an above-average recreational ski wake at 32 to 36 mph, per MasterCraft's own guidance. Boating Magazine noted a surprisingly small wake at slalom speeds during testing.
How does the XT23 differ from the MasterCraft X Series?
The XT23 sits between the entry-level NXT range and the X Series. Compared to the X23, the XT23 carries approximately 300 kg less ballast and uses a traditional narrow bow rather than the picklefork design. It is lighter, easier to trailer, and priced below the X Series, while still offering the Gen 2 or Rapid Surf system.
What fuel capacity does the XT23 have?
The 2020 model carries 55 US gallons (208 litres), consistent with the legacy specification. From 2022, the fuel tank was increased to 79 US gallons (299 litres), per motorandkeel.com specification data. Check the build year of any specific boat, as the two tank sizes are not interchangeable.

MasterCraft

Vonore, Tennessee, USA

MasterCraft is an American performance boat manufacturer founded in 1968 by waterskier Rob Shirley, who built his first hull in a two-stall horse barn in Maryville, Tennessee. The company is now headquartered in Vonore, Tennessee, where it hand-builds thousands of boats per year at a single facility on Tellico Lake.

The core range targets the watersports performance market - tournament ski, wakeboard, and wakesurf - with fifteen production models spanning the NXT, XT, X, XStar, and ProStar families. The flagship X26 (7.92m, seating for 18, CE Class C coastal certification) and the XStar 25 (7.8m, 630 hp Ilmor supercharged 6.2L engine, 18 seats) sit at the top of the range and are the models we discuss with superyacht programmes. Both carry the deep-V hull, ballast-management systems, and high-gloss gelcoat finish that translate directly to the tender role.

MasterCraft entered the superyacht tender segment formally in 2013, when MasterCraft Boats UK was appointed the brand's worldwide superyacht tender dealer. That programme covers specification advice, certified lifting solutions, logistics, and crew training - which matters when a 26-foot inboard towboat needs to live on a davit. The build quality is consistent: fiberglass laminate construction, Ilmor marine engines built on proven V8 blocks, and a five-year bow-to-stern warranty standard across the range. We'd put the X and XStar families alongside the known European tender suppliers for fit-and-finish; the differentiation is the depth of the watersports capability behind the boat, which few purpose-built tenders can match at this size.
