About this tender

Castoldi 18 RB/ SOLAS - what we know.

The JT 18 RB is the SOLAS-rated rescue boat version of the JT 18, sized at 5.68m LOA and built to MED Type Approval standards. This is the boat we put forward as the rescue craft on motoryachts above 500 GT operating under LY3 rules, where the regulatory requirement specifies a SOLAS rescue boat. The same hull, build standard and Volvo Penta D3-170 driveline as the standard JT 18, with the addition of Castoldi's RI.SE.R. self-righting system in the stern peak.

Six-passenger plus crew SOLAS certification is the working capacity. Visually the 18 RB looks essentially the same as the non-SOLAS JT 18, which means the boat doubles credibly as a guest tender alongside its rescue role. For owners and captains looking to satisfy the rescue-boat compliance requirement without dedicating a garage slot to a single-purpose craft, this is the practical answer.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

MED Type Approval compliance

MED Type Approval Certificate covers the rescue-boat regulatory requirement on yachts over 500 GT under LY3 code. This is the operational reason to specify the RB variant: it ticks the SOLAS box that the standard JT 18 does not, while keeping the same hull form and operating envelope.

02

RI.SE.R. self-righting system

Castoldi's patented recessed inflatable self-righting system is housed in a dedicated stern peak. It meets the SOLAS self-righting requirement without the bulky external apparatus that conventional rescue boats carry. The aesthetic and functional result is a boat that meets the rule and still looks like a Castoldi tender.

03

Volvo Penta D3-170 waterjet

Same Volvo Penta D3-170 marine diesel and Castoldi waterjet driveline as the standard JT 18. Service support and parts availability are global. The driveline is sized appropriately for the hull weight including the additional rescue-boat equipment.

04

Dual-role rescue and tender duty

On a motoryacht where a separate dedicated rescue boat would consume a garage slot, the 18 RB doubles credibly as a guest tender. The boat retains the deck layout and finish of the standard 18, which means it does not look out of place on the mothership stern when in use as a guest shuttle.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

Does the 18 RB satisfy the LY3 rescue-boat requirement?
Yes. MED Type Approval covers the rescue boat compliance for yachts above 500 GT operating under LY3 code. Confirm the latest rule set with your flag and class society, and ensure on-board procedures and crew training match the requirement, but the boat itself is type-approved for the role.
Can it work as a guest tender as well?
Yes, that is the operational logic for choosing the RB variant over a separate dedicated rescue boat. The visual difference between the RB and the standard 18 is subtle, so the boat does not look out of place doing guest shuttle duty when not deployed for rescue work. SOLAS certified passenger count is 5+1; for guest tender use the practical capacity is similar.
JT 18 RB or JT 19 RB?
The 19 RB is 30cm longer with the same beam and a similar self-righting system. For yachts where the garage envelope allows the larger boat, the 19 RB gives slightly more deck volume and the option of the upgraded 220 hp engine. For most working compliance use cases the 18 RB is the right size.
Is the RI.SE.R. system maintenance-intensive?
The recessed inflatable self-righting system requires periodic inspection and pressure checks on the same schedule as other inflatable safety equipment, but does not impose the maintenance load of an external rollover apparatus. Castoldi's design intent is for the system to be effectively invisible in normal tender service.

Castoldi

Albairate, Italy

Castoldi is an Italian manufacturer headquartered in Albairate, in the Milan metropolitan area of Lombardy. The company has been developing waterjet propulsion since the early 1960s, with the first mass-produced Castoldi waterjet unit presented at the Genoa Boat Show in 1969. Today more than 40,000 Castoldi hydrojet units operate worldwide, across civilian, military, and commercial fleets.

The range we ask Castoldi for runs from compact garage-fit tenders at 4.3m right through to the flagship Jet Tender 34 at 10.5m - sixteen passengers, twin 440 hp diesels paired to twin Turbodrive waterjet units, and a certified top speed of 50 knots. Every model in between follows the same build logic: deep-V hulls hand-laid in Kevlar and vinylester resin, Castoldi's own Turbodrive waterjet drives manufactured in-house, and a package of practical details - retractable helms, self-bailing cockpits, and walkthrough deck layouts - that captains value on a working programme.

The propeller-free drivetrain is the defining feature of any Castoldi. No exposed rotating parts below the keel means safe operation around swimmers and watersport guests; zero draft restriction means beach landings and sand-bank crossings that a conventional-drive tender cannot attempt. SOLAS-certified rescue versions (JT 14 RB, JT 18 RB, JT 19 RB) sit alongside the standard tender line, so owners running a dual-purpose programme can specify a single platform. We'd put the mid-range JT 21 through JT 28 models alongside the main European jet-tender alternatives: the build quality is consistent, the proprietary waterjet technology is genuinely in-house, and the range breadth covers most mothership garage sizes without compromise.
