About this tender

Castoldi 19 RB/ SOLAS - what we know.

The JT 19 RB is the SOLAS-rated rescue boat version of the JT 19. At 5.98m LOA and 2.44m beam, it is the largest of Castoldi's three SOLAS rescue boat sizes (alongside the 14 RB and 18 RB), and the variant we tend to recommend for yachts above 500 GT operating under LY3 rules where deck space allows the larger footprint. MED Type Approval covers the regulatory compliance.

Same Volvo Penta D3 driveline as the standard JT 19, with the addition of Castoldi's RI.SE.R. recessed self-righting system in the stern peak. SOLAS-certified passenger capacity is six (5+1). Visually the boat is hard to distinguish from the non-SOLAS 19, which makes it a practical choice for yachts where the rescue boat doubles as a working guest tender.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Largest SOLAS Castoldi rescue boat

At 5.98m LOA the 19 RB is the largest of Castoldi's MED type-approved rescue boats. For yachts above 500 GT where deck space and lift capacity allow, the 19 RB gives the most usable working footprint of the three SOLAS sizes. Cat C-style hull form provides the seakeeping needed for genuine rescue work in unsettled conditions.

02

RI.SE.R. recessed self-righting

Same Castoldi self-righting system as the smaller RB models. Recessed in a stern peak, the inflatable balloon and tank meet the SOLAS self-righting requirement without external apparatus. The boat retains the visual identity of a guest tender, which matters when the same craft does dual duty.

03

Volvo Penta D3 waterjet driveline

Volvo Penta D3 marine diesel coupled to Castoldi waterjet, with global parts and service support. The driveline is the same proven setup used on the standard JT 19, with the engine sized appropriately for the additional rescue equipment weight.

04

MED Type Approval compliance

MED Type Approval Certificate covers the rescue boat regulatory requirement on commercial yachts. The certification is recognised globally for SOLAS compliance, and Castoldi's documentation supports the audit trail required by class societies and flag states.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

JT 19 RB or JT 18 RB?
The 19 RB is 30cm longer with the same beam and slightly more usable deck space. For yachts where the garage envelope allows, the 19 RB gives a more comfortable working footprint without compromising the SOLAS approval. For tighter garages or smaller commercial yachts, the 18 RB is the practical answer.
Does the boat handle stretcher recovery?
Yes, the 19 RB layout supports stretcher carriage as part of the SOLAS rescue boat specification. Combined with the self-righting system and waterjet propulsion (no exposed propeller during recovery operations), it meets the working requirements for the role.
Can it operate as a primary guest tender?
Yes. The visual identity is essentially the same as the non-SOLAS 19, and the deck and console layout supports guest tender duty. Capacity in tender role is similar to SOLAS rating; for larger guest groups consider operating the 19 RB alongside a non-SOLAS larger tender on the same yacht.
What flag and class society implications should we check?
MED Type Approval covers EU registration. For other flags or class societies, confirm acceptance of the certification with the registry and class surveyor early in the procurement process. The Castoldi documentation and approval trail is well-established and acceptance is generally straightforward, but check at the front end of the project.

Castoldi

Albairate, Italy

Castoldi is an Italian manufacturer headquartered in Albairate, in the Milan metropolitan area of Lombardy. The company has been developing waterjet propulsion since the early 1960s, with the first mass-produced Castoldi waterjet unit presented at the Genoa Boat Show in 1969. Today more than 40,000 Castoldi hydrojet units operate worldwide, across civilian, military, and commercial fleets.

The range we ask Castoldi for runs from compact garage-fit tenders at 4.3m right through to the flagship Jet Tender 34 at 10.5m - sixteen passengers, twin 440 hp diesels paired to twin Turbodrive waterjet units, and a certified top speed of 50 knots. Every model in between follows the same build logic: deep-V hulls hand-laid in Kevlar and vinylester resin, Castoldi's own Turbodrive waterjet drives manufactured in-house, and a package of practical details - retractable helms, self-bailing cockpits, and walkthrough deck layouts - that captains value on a working programme.

The propeller-free drivetrain is the defining feature of any Castoldi. No exposed rotating parts below the keel means safe operation around swimmers and watersport guests; zero draft restriction means beach landings and sand-bank crossings that a conventional-drive tender cannot attempt. SOLAS-certified rescue versions (JT 14 RB, JT 18 RB, JT 19 RB) sit alongside the standard tender line, so owners running a dual-purpose programme can specify a single platform. We'd put the mid-range JT 21 through JT 28 models alongside the main European jet-tender alternatives: the build quality is consistent, the proprietary waterjet technology is genuinely in-house, and the range breadth covers most mothership garage sizes without compromise.
