About this tender

Windy SR28 - what we know.

The Windy SR28 is the natural step up from the SR26 when an owner wants more deck space, more range and more performance without abandoning the SR-line proportions. It is an 8.45m custom sport tender with a deep-V hull built using resin-infusion techniques for strength and weight reduction, and the layout is set up to actually behave as a tender rather than a sport cruiser.

Performance is the headline number: top speed comfortably north of 45 knots in working trim. The walkaround helm console keeps the deck clean and gives flexible, comfortable seating for eight to ten guests. Fuel capacity sits at 400 L, water at 90 L, which is the spec line that lets the boat run as an independent dayboat away from the mothership rather than purely as a ship-to-shore shuttle.

We specify this hull when the brief asks for the SR family aesthetic and build quality at a size that still fits a mid-large yacht garage. State-of-the-art components, fine detailing and immaculate finish are the consistent themes through the SR line, and the SR28 carries them at the most usable size in the range.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Resin-infused deep-V hull

Hull built using resin-infusion technique for optimum strength-to-weight ratio. Sharp deep-V deflects chop and keeps the running attitude stable through the working speed range. Construction follows the same protocols Windy Yacht Projects applies to the larger SR boats; the result is a hull that punches above its size in real conditions.

02

Walkaround helm console

Helm console laid out with walkaround access front to back, which keeps the deck flow open and gives flexible seating for eight to ten guests on flexible plans. Practical layout for a working tender brief: easy to load, easy to unload, no awkward steps to negotiate when the boat is running.

03

45+ knots with usable range

Top speed comfortably above 45 knots, paired with a 400 L fuel tank that gives the SR28 working range as an independent dayboat. This is the spec line that separates the SR28 from a pure shuttle tender; owners can run it half a day away from the mothership without rationing fuel.

04

Customisation programme

Comes fully equipped from the factory with a Windy Yacht Projects customisation programme available to specify deck plan, seating, fittings and finishes to the mothership's interior brief. We use the customisation programme on most builds; the standard fit is good but the mothership match is what owners typically want.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

How does the SR28 compare with the SR26?
Same SR family DNA, different brief. SR26 is the garage-fit specialist with the offset folding console; SR28 is the sport-tender step up with more deck space, more fuel and a higher performance ceiling. The SR28 is harder to stow but better at independent operation. Choice usually tracks garage geometry and the owner's expected use pattern.
What is the practical operating range?
400 L of diesel and a deep-V hull tuned for efficient cruise gives a useful working range as a dayboat away from the mothership. Specific figures depend on engine selection and load, but the SR28 is set up to run a half-day independent operation comfortably, which is more than the SR26 can do in the same configuration.
Is the customisation programme worth using?
Almost always, yes. The standard build is well-equipped, but mothership match on upholstery, fittings and the deck plan is what makes the tender feel like part of the yacht rather than a parts-bin generic. We work with Windy Yacht Projects on the spec process; lead times move out a few weeks but the result is materially better.

Windy

Västervik, Sweden

Windy (Windy Scandinavia AB) is a Scandinavian builder founded in 1966 by Hugo Vold, originally on the Norwegian coast. Production today runs from facilities in Västervik on the east coast of Sweden and in Ostróda and Słupsk in Poland, with more than 170 people across the yards turning out hulls from 26 to 77 feet across two product lines: the Sport Series and the SR Series Chase Boats and Yacht Tenders.

The build that put Windy on the superyacht-tender map is the SR52 Blackbird, a 16.10m chase boat co-designed with Dubois Naval Architects and naval architect Hans Jørgen Johnsen. It debuted at the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2010 and was rated best chase boat in the world by Superyacht Magazine in 2015. Over 130 hulls have been built. The flagship today is the SLR/SR60, an 18.18m chase platform designed in collaboration with Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design, running triple Volvo Penta IPS units to 43 knots with a range of 850 nautical miles at 25 knots.

We'd put Windy alongside the stronger Italian open-boat builders on hull stiffness and seakeeping, and ahead of most on design pedigree - the SR series has drawn collaborations with Dubois, McKeon, Espen Øino, and Studio Liaigre. The construction method across the SR range is vacuum-injection moulding with a Divinycell foam core: the result is a lighter, stiffer hull than a hand-laid equivalent, carried through into every walkaround deck and below-decks fit-out. If your programme needs a chase platform that can cover open passages and present credibly alongside a 60m-plus mothership, the SR52 or SLR/SR60 are the builds we ask Windy for.
